Wall Thickness & Section Transitions
Identify the part’s functional requirements and review changes between thin and thick sections. Avoid choosing a single minimum wall value without considering material, geometry and the actual process route.
Radii & Internal Corners
Discuss smooth transitions, stress-sensitive features and access for finishing. Radius choices should support the component function and agreed manufacturing approach.
Draft & Pattern Release
Where wax patterns are made in tooling, review release direction, parting and removable features. Do not confuse pattern-tool requirements with removing a finished metal part from a reusable metal mold.
Tolerances & Machining Allowance
Separate as-cast dimensions from final CNC-machined features. Agree machining stock and datums before tooling; review the tolerance handover guide.
Features to Review Before Tooling
- Abrupt section changes and isolated heavy sections
- Deep internal features with limited access
- Unnecessarily tight requirements on non-functional surfaces
- Features that cannot be practically machined or inspected
- Ambiguous surface-finish or material notes
DFM Drawing Checklist
- Current 2D drawing and matching 3D model
- Exact alloy, standard and final condition
- Critical fits, datums and machined surfaces
- Finish, quantities and inspection requirements
